Acrylic on gessoboard - 12 x 9 in - 2013
I was initially interested in the patterns the shadows formed on the top of this single, ripe tomato, but I soon found I was almost as interested in the broken branch nearby. So, I included them both in the painting to give a better sense of the life of the plant.
I painted them with vivid acrylics on gesso board. To bring out their liveliness and emphasize the shadows, I kept the background white and deepened the colors of the shadows.
