I wanted to celebrate this prickly pear cactus, bite mark and all, which grows in my neighbor’s yard in Santa Fe. For a while, I wondered, “Who would eat that? Look at the spines!” I thought the diner might have been a pack rat until an expert informed me that it was likely a rabbit.
I used layers of acrylic paint on gesso board, and often worked from photographs to avoid disturbing my neighbors too much. Needless to say, all of those tiny spines were a labor of love.
