Happy Hummingbirds: The delightful hummingbirds in my yard leave every fall on their amazing migration southward. Missing them, and looking at my (unsuccessful) attempts to photograph them, I decided to paint the happy feeling they bring me instead.
I refined the technique I used in Desert Birds. Starting with an under-layer of multiple colors of acrylic paint on canvas, I then worked back over the top with textured white paint to outline the shapes of the branches and birds. Rather than scratching away the white paint; however, I left areas of color uncovered, and then added to give the sense of light filtering through the bush. Finally, I focused on the birds, emphasizing their postures and relation to their environment rather than details.
