Acrylic on gessoboard - 24 x 18 in - 2014

We used to have a plum tree in our front garden. Have you ever had wildlife get into your fruit trees? That’s what happened to this poor young tree; so, I was glad I had taken pictures and made sketches of it beforehand.

I was attracted to it one sunny day when its branches were full of dangling plums. I painted them on gesso board using bold purple forms to capture their ripeness and heaviness, then added acrylic polymer beads and tar gel to deepen the effect, and finally painted back over with yellow and then another shade of purple to add shadows. They say “summer” to me.
